Why did the Pig & Rooster cross the road? To be on the cutest cake ever! that’s why!

There are some people who have been getting cakes from me since pretty much the beginning of my crazy cake making ride. While I loovvee and appreciate all my clients no matter if its their first time getting a cake or their 50th, these cake ordering veterans have become sort of like a extended cakey family. I have been through so many joyous celebrations with them and it means the world to me to share in all the excitement.

The cake I’m about to share was made for one such family, and in particular one of my favorite “littles” who is now not such a little anymore.¬†In fact Miss Caeyln hit double digits this past Monday, and that’s a pretty big deal. This kid is pretty awesome. She’s way more athletic than I could ever be, a total goofball, super sweet, and she thinks I’m 21…. That alone makes her outstanding ūüėČ

For her big 1-0 she wanted a “Moana” themed cake sans “people” characters. I was all too happy to comply. The dynamic duo featured on this cake are “Pua” (the pig) and “Heihei” (the rooster). I of course am slacking on my Disney movie¬†watching and haven’t seen the¬†flick yet, but that’s nothing good old Google couldn’t help me with.

To say I had fun making this cake is an understatement. Im a big fan of adorable characters and these two were the epitome of adorable.

Wedding Day, Snow Day

So it feels like its been at least a year since I posted a blog. Wait, I just checked, it’s been longer than that. In fact its been almost two years since I posted a blog. I’m horrible, really I am. I have a ton of posts I started but never finished and I have SO many cakes I haven’t shared and that’s just not fair. I could start listing the reasons why I’m so far behind, why 2016 was literally the worst year ever to be a “Sara”, why I have pretty much disappeared from the “Cake Scene” online when I’ve been making such fun cakes for my clients, but honestly it doesn’t matter now…Because I’m back!

Not only do I plan on sharing my recent cakes but I’ll be throwing in “flashbacks” here and there to get all of us caught up (because I cant even remember everything I’ve made, so it will even be new and exciting to me).

So with all that aside let us get to the cake of the hour. Remember back to the first week of January here in good old Connecticut? If you’re not from around here…just imagine the unpredictability of winter in New England…then times that by ten. Well months in advance, when I booked this wedding for my two awesome friend, Cat and Keith, I joked about it snowing. Bad Sara….Bad bad Sara. So of course it snowed. But it wasn’t just “snow”…it was SNOW. Which is pretty fitting for the season and the general theme of the cake….but stressful as all heck when you need to drive a bit of a way to get to the venue.

Normally my deliveries consist of me and a “helper”. The unlucky person helping me is usually my boyfriend or my mother…both of them are rockstar helpers…and both of them hate dealing with me. I may be a tad neurotic…just a little bit. This time around not only did they both accompany me, but my Stepfather drove. Needless to say, I had a car full of people who wanted to¬†throw me out of a moving vehicle¬†on more than one occasion.

It took us about 3 times longer to get there, but all in¬†all the drive was ok….well except for the crazy girl holding the huge cake while simultaneously weeping and screeching…she was annoying. That girl may or may not have been me.

Finally we arrived at the beautiful “Bill Miller’s Castle” (one of my favorite venues ever) and I went to work. Not only was the venue perfect. I had a great time catching up with some long lost pals while getting to do my “thang”. Delivery perfection.

So now for the part you actually came here for (not my babbling) I introduce to you, the cake!

I pretty much had free rein on this cake, and that is always exciting. The beautiful bride wanted a winter theme without it being too “Holiday-ish”. She was digging the different texture look, which I was more than happy to work with. The couple¬†also wanted the topper to be a non-edible keepsake, which was super fun to make. It really gave me a chance to be creative in a whole new way. Aside from the topper and the lighter colored ribbon though, its still all edible. The cake and cupcakes were my beloved “Red Queen” flavor (Red Velvet & Vanilla marble cake with ganache and cream cheese filling…yum!) so I could only imagine the fun contrast of color when they cut into the cake.

Amp’d up Wedding

Earlier in the year I met Fay & Nick. A super cool couple who were having a their wedding at a family house in the area. Home-based celebrations was quite the trend this year and let me tell you I LOVE them, especially this one. It was everything you would expect from a wedding (elegant, gorgeous, amazingly orchestrated) but at the same time, had a warmth to it making it have such a comfortable vibe. My favorite element of their wedding was the cake though….obviously haha.

When they came to me I loved their idea. They wanted the cake to represent them both by combining what each of them wanted. Most people do the whole separate “groom’s” cake but they wanted it it all together…and I was down with that! The idea presented to me was a base cake that looked like a “Amp” (Nick makes them and oh boy are they gorgeous) and have a pretty two-tiered traditional wedding cake sitting on top of it. Fay wanted the cake on top to be feminine and more on the simple side with a few flowers. They brought me a bunch of inspiration pics and picture of his Amps. I knew this cake would be a challenge, but I knew it was something I definitely wanted to do.

When the day finally came to start the cake I was a nervous wreck. The cake was pretty huge and super heavy. The amp part was the hardest, and the first try collapsed. I was a whack-a-do after that. When something goes wrong in my cake world, there is pretty much no living with me. I should publicly apologize now for all the misery I put my mom, boyfriend, dogs, mailman, etc through. Thankfully the second try was a success. Once I got the structure down, the next test was the “screen” front on the amp. I tried a bajillion techniques and finally used an actual screen to press into the front after painting. It was also the first time I did brush embroidery and made peonies!! I was thrilled with the result.

In the end this cake made me “over-the-moon” happy…even if I yelled at it and called it names throughout the whole creation process. Hope you like it!!

Don’t Dead?….Open Inside???

I cant stress this enough….I am huge “scaredy cat”. No seriously. I’ve told you all this before. Read my post here to refresh your memory.

My friends have tried to convince me its all in my head (well duh) but I cant help it…I just cant watch scary stuff. And gory movies?? One word…GROSS. My boyfriend convinced me to see “Hostel” with him…Categorizing it as a “thriller”. Well if “THRILLER” means “BLOOD FEST” he nailed that right on the head. I still hate him for that. I now have movie trust issues and must watch all trailers before going to see anything. Oh and did I mention I am terrified of the impending “zombie Apocalypse”…I will be the first to die, I just know it. I don’t stand a chance.

Knowing all this, you would think I would cringe when someone asks for a cake fitting anywhere in the genres of “creepy”, “bloody”, “zombie”, “scarey”, etc…but that is not true my friends…I LOVE it!

I can’t explain the reasoning behind my love of “blood” on cake (fake of course…the blood…not the cake). It probably comes from my infatuation with the whole special fx make-up scene. In fact, I did a “Pride Prejudice and Zombie inspired photo-shoot last year that was super freakin’ cool!

Zombie Inspired PhotoshootI’m the one on the right looking like I’m having WAYYYY too much evil-like fun. See what I mean? When I’m in control of the situation I’m fine…when I’m watching it happen on the big screen and I cant stop it…so not fine.

So finally getting to the cake portion of this post…I was asked to make this cake to be inspired by “The Walking Dead”. Now I know a huge number of my facebook pals watch it (considering the 2,000 posts I see about it on a Sunday Night) and my boyfriend watches it too (in the other room where I cant see or hear ANY of it) but I have not watched a single second of it. No offense to the masses who love it, you love it, and I’m cool with that…just dont make me watch it (see above comments concerning zombie apocalypse). Naturally this posed a small problem for me as I refused to watch it and I needed source material. I ended up relying on pictures given to me and advice from my boyfriend…I ended up with this.

My first thought was “Don’t Dead, Open Inside”? is this serious? Obviously the person writing this never was big on sentence structure. But I guess when faced with impending doom, one doesn’t consider that. I had a huge feeling this cake would land me on “Cake Wrecks” (a non- Sunday Sweets edition that is) but I was assured this is how it is supposed to be written…and if its not, my boyfriend has some splainin’ to do…

My favorite part was making the little hands and drenching them in “blood” (aka red food coloring) I laughed like a maniacal 5 year old the whole time (I’m not sure how most people dont realize I have problems) and completely loved the outcome. Hope you do too.
