Ok so is anyone still reeling from last Sunday’s episode of Game Of Thrones? If you haven’t seen it yet…. SPOILERS ARE COMING… Ok, still here? Then you saw it or you want to ruin it for yourself, … Continue reading
In honor of the 29th anniversary of my brother’s birth this past week, I am posting the cake I made for him 3 years ago….yes….once again I am sharing a cake wayyyy later than I should. Honestly though, This post is mainly for when I serve up half-assed non decorated, plain ole cupcakes to him today, I can kindly show him this and remind him that 3 years ago he got a nice cake. Plus, I’m really only thinking of him, because I’m saving all my energy for next year’s big 3-0. We wouldn’t want to outshine that one after all.
So what was a sister to do?! Cue heroic music!
shout out to Skibicks123 for your having this on your youtube channel 😀
My quest was to combine both into something awesome and really I kinda had too much fun with it if I’m being honest.
Ladies and Gents…I give you…”The Missing Link”!
Now I dont know about you, but Im not too sure what Princess Zelda’s issue is here..I mean its just Link….wait…that’s not Link? Who is it? OHHHHHHH….you rascally Totoro….you tricked me!
I think the big questions we all are asking are, “Where’s Link?”, “Does he know Totoro is impersonating him?”, “Can you really save more on Gieco car insurance?” And these are all excellent questions…..that I have no idea how to answer. My guess is he got tired of saving Zelda’s butt and decided to take a little vacation, so naturally he asked his Neighbor Totoro to stand in for him for a bit so he can go fishing or maybe just take a well deserved nap. I can tell you though that I think Totoro is pretty darn convincing and I’m pretty sure no one will even notice.
This really was one of my favorite cakes from 2014 and I’m a little ashamed that I’ve been meaning to post it but I’m just getting to it now.
James, if you’re reading this happy birthday little brother who is way too much taller than me…I wish you a happy 29th birthday and I can’t wait to embarrass you with next year’s cake. (kind of like the time I did this)
Thank you all for reading and I hope you enjoy my weird sense of humor…oh and that you like the cake too.
There are some people who have been getting cakes from me since pretty much the beginning of my crazy cake making ride. While I loovvee and appreciate all my clients no matter if its their first time getting a cake or their 50th, these cake ordering veterans have become sort of like a extended cakey family. I have been through so many joyous celebrations with them and it means the world to me to share in all the excitement.
The cake I’m about to share was made for one such family, and in particular one of my favorite “littles” who is now not such a little anymore. In fact Miss Caeyln hit double digits this past Monday, and that’s a pretty big deal. This kid is pretty awesome. She’s way more athletic than I could ever be, a total goofball, super sweet, and she thinks I’m 21…. That alone makes her outstanding 😉
For her big 1-0 she wanted a “Moana” themed cake sans “people” characters. I was all too happy to comply. The dynamic duo featured on this cake are “Pua” (the pig) and “Heihei” (the rooster). I of course am slacking on my Disney movie watching and haven’t seen the flick yet, but that’s nothing good old Google couldn’t help me with.
To say I had fun making this cake is an understatement. Im a big fan of adorable characters and these two were the epitome of adorable.
Everyone, say “aloha” to the cutest Pig & Rooster cake ever.
SQUEE!! Seriously though. I had a hard time giving this one up.
Here’s a few closeups.
The best part was the birthday girl totally approved, which made this cake 100 times sweeter ❤
Sending a small shout out to the Birthday girl. Happy Happy Birthday Caelyn! Thank you for being so darn cool (and for thinking I’m way younger than I really am).
As always, I hope you all enjoy my ramblings and cake pictures! Have a great night everyone!
So it feels like its been at least a year since I posted a blog. Wait, I just checked, it’s been longer than that. In fact its been almost two years since I posted a blog. I’m horrible, really I am. I have a ton of posts I started but never finished and I have SO many cakes I haven’t shared and that’s just not fair. I could start listing the reasons why I’m so far behind, why 2016 was literally the worst year ever to be a “Sara”, why I have pretty much disappeared from the “Cake Scene” online when I’ve been making such fun cakes for my clients, but honestly it doesn’t matter now…Because I’m back!
Not only do I plan on sharing my recent cakes but I’ll be throwing in “flashbacks” here and there to get all of us caught up (because I cant even remember everything I’ve made, so it will even be new and exciting to me).
So with all that aside let us get to the cake of the hour. Remember back to the first week of January here in good old Connecticut? If you’re not from around here…just imagine the unpredictability of winter in New England…then times that by ten. Well months in advance, when I booked this wedding for my two awesome friend, Cat and Keith, I joked about it snowing. Bad Sara….Bad bad Sara. So of course it snowed. But it wasn’t just “snow”…it was SNOW. Which is pretty fitting for the season and the general theme of the cake….but stressful as all heck when you need to drive a bit of a way to get to the venue.
Normally my deliveries consist of me and a “helper”. The unlucky person helping me is usually my boyfriend or my mother…both of them are rockstar helpers…and both of them hate dealing with me. I may be a tad neurotic…just a little bit. This time around not only did they both accompany me, but my Stepfather drove. Needless to say, I had a car full of people who wanted to throw me out of a moving vehicle on more than one occasion.
It took us about 3 times longer to get there, but all in all the drive was ok….well except for the crazy girl holding the huge cake while simultaneously weeping and screeching…she was annoying. That girl may or may not have been me.
Finally we arrived at the beautiful “Bill Miller’s Castle” (one of my favorite venues ever) and I went to work. Not only was the venue perfect. I had a great time catching up with some long lost pals while getting to do my “thang”. Delivery perfection.
So now for the part you actually came here for (not my babbling) I introduce to you, the cake!
I pretty much had free rein on this cake, and that is always exciting. The beautiful bride wanted a winter theme without it being too “Holiday-ish”. She was digging the different texture look, which I was more than happy to work with. The couple also wanted the topper to be a non-edible keepsake, which was super fun to make. It really gave me a chance to be creative in a whole new way. Aside from the topper and the lighter colored ribbon though, its still all edible. The cake and cupcakes were my beloved “Red Queen” flavor (Red Velvet & Vanilla marble cake with ganache and cream cheese filling…yum!) so I could only imagine the fun contrast of color when they cut into the cake.
Here’s a close up of the bride and groom pinecones. Squee!
And now let me spam you with a couple more photos because I just loooovvveeed this cake.
Lastly, here’s my favorite picture. The hilarious and amazing Best Man decided to pose in the mirror while I was taking some shots. Love him!
Sending a huge congratulations to Cat & Keith! Thank you so much for having me be a part of your special day.
I hope you all enjoy, and thank you for reading! Its great to be back ❤
Date: Jan. 7th, 2017
Venue: the breathtaking Bill Miller’s Castle in Branford, CT
I’m sure I can speak for most (if not all) bakers out there when I say that every once in a while you get a request that is so “your style” that when the person shares their idea and asks you to make this cake your response is “OH HELL YES!”….ok most of the time its “Yes, I can totally do that.” while you’re dancing around the room screaming for joy. This was one of those cakes.
The beautiful bride, Rachel, came to me in search of a Groom’s cake of epic proportions….I like to think I held up my end of the bargain.
You may recall my talk of being a nerd back in the post about my Baby Star Wars cake, well with that, add “gamer nerd”. My brother James (you met him back in the TA DA! cake post) had EVERY gaming system you could imagine growing up. I’m not exaggerating…my poor mother would cringe every December when my darling baby brother would produce his “wish list” for Santa and it of course would consist of the newest and greatest system and you could hear the money running from her purse. So basically we had it all, and Ive played my fair share of games. Two of my favorite characters in the video-gaming world were “Link” from Legend of Zelda (yes the boy is named Link by the way….NOT Zelda) and Mario, from well…Super Mario. Both of these guys hold a special place in my heart. So when Rachel requested a “Super Mario”, “Legend of Zelda”, & “TMNT” mash-up cake (you already know how I feel about those turtles), not only did I say “YES!”, but I did that “dance of screaming joy” I mentioned earlier.
The initial design was cool…
but with Rachel’s creative thinking it went from “cool” to “BEST cake ever”…
(yea I know the second one isn’t colored…I got lazy…shhhh)
Now I know what you’re thinking, “Well Sara, its one thing to draw out a concept of the ‘BEST cake ever’ but did it really come out just as awesome?”…to answer your question….
and just in-case you need some more….
The end result made me squeal like a 5 year old on a sugar high, that finally got that pony she was asking for. My favorite part is definitely the Goomba though. I wanted to keep him….but I decided the cake needed him more than me.
Hope you all enjoy!

Earlier in the year I met Fay & Nick. A super cool couple who were having a their wedding at a family house in the area. Home-based celebrations was quite the trend this year and let me tell you I LOVE them, especially this one. It was everything you would expect from a wedding (elegant, gorgeous, amazingly orchestrated) but at the same time, had a warmth to it making it have such a comfortable vibe. My favorite element of their wedding was the cake though….obviously haha.
When they came to me I loved their idea. They wanted the cake to represent them both by combining what each of them wanted. Most people do the whole separate “groom’s” cake but they wanted it it all together…and I was down with that! The idea presented to me was a base cake that looked like a “Amp” (Nick makes them and oh boy are they gorgeous) and have a pretty two-tiered traditional wedding cake sitting on top of it. Fay wanted the cake on top to be feminine and more on the simple side with a few flowers. They brought me a bunch of inspiration pics and picture of his Amps. I knew this cake would be a challenge, but I knew it was something I definitely wanted to do.
here’s a sketch I did of how I envisioned it.
When the day finally came to start the cake I was a nervous wreck. The cake was pretty huge and super heavy. The amp part was the hardest, and the first try collapsed. I was a whack-a-do after that. When something goes wrong in my cake world, there is pretty much no living with me. I should publicly apologize now for all the misery I put my mom, boyfriend, dogs, mailman, etc through. Thankfully the second try was a success. Once I got the structure down, the next test was the “screen” front on the amp. I tried a bajillion techniques and finally used an actual screen to press into the front after painting. It was also the first time I did brush embroidery and made peonies!! I was thrilled with the result.
In the end this cake made me “over-the-moon” happy…even if I yelled at it and called it names throughout the whole creation process. Hope you like it!!

P.S. a big shout-out to Donna over at Yummy-O Cake Company for the help with making my own “Peony” cutters. She is amazing, please check out her awesome work! ❤
I cant stress this enough….I am huge “scaredy cat”. No seriously. I’ve told you all this before. Read my post here to refresh your memory.
My friends have tried to convince me its all in my head (well duh) but I cant help it…I just cant watch scary stuff. And gory movies?? One word…GROSS. My boyfriend convinced me to see “Hostel” with him…Categorizing it as a “thriller”. Well if “THRILLER” means “BLOOD FEST” he nailed that right on the head. I still hate him for that. I now have movie trust issues and must watch all trailers before going to see anything. Oh and did I mention I am terrified of the impending “zombie Apocalypse”…I will be the first to die, I just know it. I don’t stand a chance.
Knowing all this, you would think I would cringe when someone asks for a cake fitting anywhere in the genres of “creepy”, “bloody”, “zombie”, “scarey”, etc…but that is not true my friends…I LOVE it!
I can’t explain the reasoning behind my love of “blood” on cake (fake of course…the blood…not the cake). It probably comes from my infatuation with the whole special fx make-up scene. In fact, I did a “Pride Prejudice and Zombie inspired photo-shoot last year that was super freakin’ cool!
I’m the one on the right looking like I’m having WAYYYY too much evil-like fun. See what I mean? When I’m in control of the situation I’m fine…when I’m watching it happen on the big screen and I cant stop it…so not fine.
So finally getting to the cake portion of this post…I was asked to make this cake to be inspired by “The Walking Dead”. Now I know a huge number of my facebook pals watch it (considering the 2,000 posts I see about it on a Sunday Night) and my boyfriend watches it too (in the other room where I cant see or hear ANY of it) but I have not watched a single second of it. No offense to the masses who love it, you love it, and I’m cool with that…just dont make me watch it (see above comments concerning zombie apocalypse). Naturally this posed a small problem for me as I refused to watch it and I needed source material. I ended up relying on pictures given to me and advice from my boyfriend…I ended up with this.
My first thought was “Don’t Dead, Open Inside”? is this serious? Obviously the person writing this never was big on sentence structure. But I guess when faced with impending doom, one doesn’t consider that. I had a huge feeling this cake would land me on “Cake Wrecks” (a non- Sunday Sweets edition that is) but I was assured this is how it is supposed to be written…and if its not, my boyfriend has some splainin’ to do…
My favorite part was making the little hands and drenching them in “blood” (aka red food coloring) I laughed like a maniacal 5 year old the whole time (I’m not sure how most people dont realize I have problems) and completely loved the outcome. Hope you do too.
Scaredy Sara ;]
I am a child of the 80’s and with that comes a certain love for any “franchise” that debuted during that era…One in particular that comes to mind ♫ ♪ ♫”TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES!”♫ ♪ ♫ (is the song stuck in your head now? I know I cant stop singing it…)
This cake was made for one of my amazing clients that has been getting her husband’s birthday cake from me for [I believe] the past four years (my mind is mush lately…lol) This couple is awesome…no strike that…AWESOME! They are gamers and geeks just like moi, and seriously, they are just so sweet and did I mention awesome?
My task this year was to create a “TMNT” cake…but you know me, I always need to make something different…so instead of modeling them after their original “turtley” selves….or their “newer” look…I decided I wanted to “pitch” an idea that was more Fun….enter “Funko“…have you heard of them? If not…take a minute to bask in the awesomeness (yes I’m fully aware of my “awesome” usage…) I am infatuated with their “POP!” Vinyl figures…like its pretty scarey how much I love these things. So anywho, extremely long story short, I asked my client, she said “Yes!” (turns out her hubby collects them too…squee!!) and I set forth on making the cake .
Honestly, I’m sure every cake decorator can attest to this, but there are things that we hate to make in the world of sugar and things we LOOOOVVVEEE to make…my “love” is character modeling…(on a side note my “hate” is bows…just throwing that out there) I had such a blast making these little guys and seriously if you know me well enough, you know I was sitting here making them talk to each other like they were action figures and singing that darn theme song into the wee hours of the morning.
(kinda like the “Yoda” doll on my “baby Star Wars” cake)
Well if you excuse me, I’m going to go fight some crime and eat some pizza…or at least sing a certain theme song about 4 billion more times…TURTLE POWER!!
(special thanks to YouTube user EKhan33 for posting this video so I can get it stuck in everyone’s head)
I dont know how many of you know this but…
“Hi my name is Sara, and Im a nerd”
There! its out! my dirty little secret has finally seen the light of day!…
Ok, who am I kidding?! I let my nerd flag fly every hour of every day. I’m not ashamed that I know more about Marvel superheroes than coach purses, or that I’m more impressed with my boyfriend’s battleground armor than my friend’s new cashmere sweater. I have tattoos written in Quenya & Khuzdul (after studying both languages and writing them myself, might I add) and my house is chock full of sci-fi novels and action figures. Most of all I cry like a baby every time I watch the end of “The Fellowship of the Ring” (why Boromir!? why!?) and feel elated when the rebels destroy “Death Star” number two.
So with all that being said, any time I am approached with a cake order that lets my nerdy side shine, I am SO in!
About a month ago my friend Amanda (yes, of the amazingly awesome Amanda Rose Photography) decided she wanted to have a “Star Wars” party for her son’s first birthday. On a coolness level of 1 to 10…this is about a billion. So naturally I knew exactly where I wanted to go with this theme.
Ladies and Jedi, I give you…
Baby “Star Wars” Episode 1: The Playground Menace!!
Speechless? yea..I know…its really that awesome. I mean I dont mean to be all “hey look at me! I made a cake fit for a Sith’ari” but I’m just a tad bit in love with this one and I’m not afraid to say it ;]
The setting of the cake is a playground on the “Forest moon of Endor” complete with a “Death Star” play-house. Oh and before you even say it, yes, I know TECHNICALLY if they were all babies, “Darth Vader” would indeed be “Anakin Sywalker” but just let me have this darn it!
and lastly we have Baby “Chewy”…who is not the least bit pleased that Mama “Wookiee” stuck a pink bow in his fur ;] (And his little doll who looks awfully familiar dont forget.)
All in all, This is at least in the “top 5” for my favorite cakes that I have made (if not number one, for at least the moment) I had WAY too much fun making it and I hope you all enjoy!
Oh and…May the Force be with you ;]
In my household we dont agree on many things, especially when it comes to entertainment and music…but there is one rising starlet who holds a special place in our hearts around here.
Her name is Miranda, and you can call her Miranda.
I was first introduced to this mystical siren by my brother James (we will talk more about him later) when he showed me her cover of “Starships“, and have been hooked ever since. She is quite the entertainer. The words eccentric, unique, and “special” come to mind. I mean, to captivate such a huge audience of people with such raw and unbalanced talent, she is a unicorn in a field of horses.
Last year I failed to make James a birthday cake..instead he got a good ole cake in a box from the grocery store…Im not naming any names but it starts with an “e” and ends with “ntenmann’s”. Now where one of these cakes is well suited for a late night stress eating session (not that Im speaking from experience) it is in no way how the brother of a freakin’ cake maker should be celebrating his birthday. I knew this year needed to be over-the-top, memorable, “EPIC” if you will. And well, James, my mother, and I are such huge fans that when it came time to decide on what to make my brother for a cake this year…there was no question.
I give you the “Miranda Cake”
James had no idea it was coming. Seriously.
He even decided to “dress” the part and pose with his cake in style…
In my opinion, he’s never looked better.
But he just wanted everyone to know hes usually not THAT beautiful, so we took a less extravagant picture.
All in all I had a blast making this cake, even more fun singing at the top of my lungs in an off-key fashion to the cake, while frosting it. The only thing that would have made it better is if we had Miranda actually singing “Happy Birthday” to him ;]
P.S. you can see more videos of Miranda’s epicness here
